Letting the pond go.

It's great that we have had some rain,
but there's been just enough to keep the plants alive,
and not enough to start replenishing the water table.

Our pond is nearly dried up.
The frogs are happy with it,
but the fish are doomed.

In this type of ecosystem,
ponds are filled and drained naturally,
by beavers and otters respectively.

Like a forest fire contributes to the renewal of the land,
ponds benefit from being emptied periodically.
The soil in the water needs to be balanced.

And though I would like the pond filled up all of the time.
I realize that it would be detrimental to the health of the pond.
The new plants on the dry bed are growing vigorously;
an act of balance and reconciliation.
